Wise: Perception is reality

Do you ever feel misunderstood by others? Maybe you feel that people at work don’t get you. Or that your friends are not on the same page.

Maybe others truly don’t get you. But that’s not because of them, it’s most likely because of your own behavior.

We live in a world where we’re constantly judged. And how do people judge you? By looking at what they see.

In other words, the perception that people have of you becomes reality in their minds. Now, it doesn’t matter how you truly are when it comes to perception. When people perceive you in a certain way, it’s almost impossible to change that.

That’s why it’s important to be mindful of how you present yourself. Always present the best version of yourself, no matter how tired or unmotivated you might be.

Wealthy: Passive income ideas

In 99 out of 100 cases, it takes years to get rich. But since the media loves highlighting that one person who got rich overnight with a few passive income ideas, many of us have a screwed-up idea of how people get wealthy.

While we know that get-rich-quick schemes never work (otherwise they wouldn’t be called that), most folks don’t know that building wealth is not that complicated.

The problem with getting rich is that it takes time. And in this impatient world, people just don’t want to wait. They want to be rich now.

But if you decide to go against the grain and commit to building long-term wealth, you will inevitably become wealthy if you do one thing: Increase your net worth every year.

The best way to make that happen is to have multiple income streams. If you only have one or two income streams right now, that’s fine. With consistency and time, you’ll eventually get there. It doesn’t happen overnight.

If you’re serious about building wealth over time, you will accomplish that goal because you control your behavior. When executed well, the following passive income ideas will increase your net worth gradually.

One interesting thing

The Austrian psychotherapist, Alfred Adler, believed that we are the masters of our destiny:

“No experience is a cause of success or failure. We do not suffer from the shock of our experiences — the so-called trauma — but we make out of them just what suits our purposes.”

Never let the bad things that happened to you in the past define how you look at yourself today.

Every day is a new opportunity to do things differently.

Wise & Wealthy: Money is time, and “wasting” time

Wise: “Wasting” time

A big misconception about productivity and high achievement is that one must be productive every hour of the day.

A lot of ambitious people even feel guilty if they do “nothing” for a day. That’s not healthy.

In fact, it’s helpful to do nothing sometimes. Charlie Munger once said that Warren Buffett “is sitting on his ass and reading” half of the time!

Now, there are good and bad ways to do nothing. Putting off important tasks and not doing work because you don’t feel like it is obviously not helpful.

However, sometimes you just need to “waste” a few hours to remain in balance.

That type of time wasting is not a real waste because it serves a purpose. When you occasionally kill time and just enjoy doing nothing, you remain energetic.

If you’re always working, working, working, you risk burning out or getting depressed. Now, that’s a real waste of time. Some people burn out and remain that way for years.

We can avoid that by living a balanced life.

↳ Waste a Few Hours, so You Don’t Waste Years

Wealthy: Money is time

To make the above easier, we also need some financial security. I would love to tell you it’s okay to take off any day of the week and do nothing, but we all have our responsibilities.

Life is hard. And we must stay practical.

Sometimes we just have too many obligations to do nothing. Now, there’s also a solution for that.

By reminding yourself that life is about time, not about money, you will optimize for the former.

However, that doesn’t mean you neglect the latter. We all need money to live.

If you use that money to buy more free time, that means you’re winning in life.

Many of us are facing financial challenges. During these moments we want to throw in the towel and give up on our goals to become more financially free.

But remember: The foundation of financial success is forged during economic downturns.

If you’re able to keep living simple and keep on investing (in yourself and in assets), you will get out on the other side stronger.

↳ Money Is Time—Not the Other Way Around

One interesting thing

I’m currently reading, Money: The True Story of a Made-Up Thing by Jacob Goldstein. Really enjoying this book. Here’s an interesting quote:

“For modern money to work—to have banks, and a stock market, and a central bank—there needs to be tension. Investors and bankers and activists and government officials all need to be arguing over who gets to do what, and when.”

There’s a lot of arguing right now. Fortunately, that will only make our system stronger.

Wise: Persuasive writing

One of my friends works in health care and he recently said, “I probably write more than you do!” He was kidding. But he also wasn’t because a large part of his work is to write patient reports.

And like almost everyone else, he communicates with his co-workers daily on messaging apps or email.

While most of us never think about it, we always write with a purpose. We write to achieve a certain objective.

Persuasive writing is about making sure you achieve your objective in the most effective way possible. One tip to make your writing more persuasive is to make things easy for your reader.

When you make it easy for others to respond (by keeping it short or by suggesting a potential call to action), you increase the likelihood of getting a response.

When your writing is vague and lacks a clear purpose, and people have to think hard to figure out what you want, they probably will ignore you. And that’s because so many of us get a lot of emails, messages, and requests.

Persuasive writers are great at putting themselves in the shoes of the reader.

Wealthy: Business lessons I learned from writing

This week’s Wise & Wealthy is dedicated to writing. And when we think of writing, we often think of the craft.

Some of us have very romantic ideas about the lifestyle of a writer. We think of Ernest Hemingway who was such an adventurer. But writing is more than just an art or craft—it’s also a business.

I’ve been in the business of writing since 2015 now, and I’ve learned more than all the years combined in university, grad school, and starting a “real” business.

With writing, you instantly get feedback from your readers. When people don’t like it, they will ignore it, which is the harshest feedback.

With any pursuit in life, we never get it right on the first try. We constantly need to adjust and learn. It’s like working with a sports coach.

If you want to learn a particular sport, you can get a long way by simply observing how others do it. But you will make leaps once you work with a coach who can provide you with instant feedback.

Writing is like that. But you don’t need a coach; you need readers. If people engage with your content, that’s good. If they don’t, it means you need to adjust something.

7 Business Lessons I Learned from 7 Years of Writing

One interesting thing

The secret to improving your writing is to get training. Ernest Hemingway famously said:

“It’s none of their business that you have to learn to write. Let them think you were born that way.”

Writing has little to do with talent—it’s a skill. That means we can improve it with deliberate training.

This is true for any skill. If you want to accomplish a specific thing in life, whether it’s starting a business, running a marathon, or becoming a public speaker, focus on the skills you need to develop to achieve that goal.

3 Tips to Make Your Writing Persuasive

persuasive writer

“Sell me this pen.” That’s a popular line from the movie, The Wolf of Wall Street, starring Leonardo Dicaprio. The idea is that if you’re a great persuader you can convince any person to buy a pen.

These types of lines sound great in movies or in music, but they reflect real life. We don’t sell anything to anyone because no one likes to be sold.

Persuasive writing recognizes that fact.

And let’s be real, EVERY writer needs to be persuasive. Whether you’re a designer, project manager, nurse, or engineer, you communicate in the written word at work.

When you make your writing persuasive, you will get what you want more easily. We all write for a purpose in our careers. And you want to make sure that your words hit the mark.

That’s what persuasive writing is all about. And here are 3 tips on how to actually persuade people to act using your words.
