Stoic lessons for life

I’ve been practicing and studying Stoicism for a decade. Here are the top 5 things I’ve learned from the greatest Stoic philosophers.

  1. Life is about managing your reactions — We give too much time and energy to the things we don’t control. What others think, what happened to us, the economy, etc. Life is not about what happens, but how you respond.
  2. Misfortune is fortune — Bad experiences may seem catastrophic at first, but over time, they often shape us in positive ways. They make us better people, and that becomes our fortune.
  3. Thinking about loss makes you tougher — Imagine losing your job, home, or relationships. This makes you appreciate them more. And you won’t take them for granted. The Stoics taught that visualizing life without comfort builds resilience.
  4. Guard your mind vigorously — Be mindful of what occupies your mind. Avoid gossip, social media garbage, and other negative influences that cloud your judgment. For example, cutting down my social media time improved my focus and mood significantly.
  5. Embrace amor fati —  Accepting life as it comes has made my days much more peaceful. Embrace each moment, good or bad, as necessary and something to be embraced rather than avoided.

I hope you can apply these lessons in your life to find more peace, calm, and tranquility. What Stoicism does for me is priceless.

Every day, philosophy gives me the inspiration and wisdom to live my own life without getting distracted by anything. There are 12 more Stoic lessons in my new article.

One interesting thing

The common perception is that the older you get, the fewer risks you take. When people get stuck on old beliefs and ideas, they limit their own growth.

This is especially true when it comes to investing. As the investor, Howard Marks puts it:

“There are old investors, and there are bold investors, but there are no old bold investors.”

Boldness isn’t defined by your age. Keep developing your skills and knowledge.
