Wise: Time perspectives

Awareness of time perspectives helps you to live better because you will make better use of your time. It will help you to enjoy your days, learn from the past, and shape a better future.

But it requires us to find a balance between a focus on the past, present, and future. I approach it with the 1/9/90 rule.

  • 1% past-focused: I take about 15 minutes a day to journal. But I don’t just think about the past when I journal. I try to occasionally reflect on the past to learn.
  • 9% future-focused: This is the time I dedicate to planning and thinking about the future.
  • 90% present-focused: This is when I execute my plans and the time I spend enjoying my days.

This distribution is just something I keep in mind and don’t keep track of. I use it as a guideline to live my life.

If I notice that I’m thinking about the past multiple times a day, I remind myself that it’s fruitless. When I’m over-planning and getting ahead of myself, I correct myself as well.

If you spend 90% of your mental energy on the present, you will always feel like you’re making good use of your short time on this planet.

Wealthy: Mindset shifts

One of the biggest mindset shifts I’ve made in my career is to always do more than asked or required.

For example, I’m currently doing a final round of editing on my next book, The Stoic Path to Wealth.

If my editor gives feedback about a particular chapter of my book, I think about how to apply it to the rest of the book.

In the core chapters of my book, I tell a story of a prominent investor. In one of the chapters, my editor asked whether it was really relevant to share so many details about the investor.

So I thought, what about the other chapters? I went through ALL the other stories and looked at it that way. Eventually, I cut out a lot from the investor profiles and tightened each.

Throughout my career, I picked up many small mindsets shifts from successful people. In my latest article, I share 4 other mindsets you can adopt to get wealthier.

One interesting thing

Our decision-making abilities can be influenced by various factors, including the state of our body and mind. In his book, The Brain: The Story of You, David Eagleman explains:

“Sometimes you’re more capable of good decision making, and other times your neural parliament will come out with a vote you later regret. Why? It’s because the outcome depends on many changing factors about the state of your body, states which can change hour to hour.”

This insight reminds us that, when faced with important decisions, it’s crucial to ensure our body and mind are well-rested.
